The Departments of Energy and Veterans Affairs have joined those temporarily banning the AI tool.
The chief information officer of the Department of Energy (DOE) has temporarily blocked computer system access to ChatGPT, determining that the online word generation AI program posed a high risk to the department’s data security. Though the department has blocked ChatGPT, joining a growing number of governmental agencies who have done the same, the department remains open to other AI algorithms, especially those developed internally.
“DOE is taking a risk-based approach to AI software by continually assessing the landscape. DOE has conditionally approved Google Cloud Platform that includes AI technology and pursuing additional AI technologies,” said department spokesperson Chad Smith. “DOE is actively pursuing generative AI use cases to be developed in 2024 and building a pipeline for use cases that allows us to prioritize the most impactful concepts to DOE’s mission.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs recently confirmed that ChatGPT and other commercial generative AI services are not allowed on their network. The Social Security Administration and USDA previously blocked or banned third-party generative AI tools. The Department of Homeland Security has conditionally approved some AI tools, including ChatGPT.
